There is no doubt that nowadays, the world is becoming more interconnected, thanks to strengthening communications technology and the growing number of businesses that want to sell services internationally.

While this global approach to modern enterprise has its benefits, it is sometimes easy to forget the significance of local supply chains. One vital aspect of any region’s commercial, economic, and residential stability is its energy supply. Both residents and industry rely on continuous power to ensure life continues as normal, with failsafe precautions in place to guarantee that energy production and consumption remain almost uninterrupted. When it comes to delivering robust and reliable energy networks, particularly in growing regions, it is essential for infrastructure projects to invest in and actively use localized offerings.

Alfanar Projects is a dedicated member of the Energy Localization Forum, and has supported many of these projects to deliver smarter energy solutions as well as world-class infrastructure.  Drawing on its global expertise in green hydrogen, energy storage, and renewable energy technologies, the company brings advanced capabilities that directly strengthen Saudi Arabia’s localization agenda and ensure long-term energy resilience.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 is shaping a more self-sufficient and sustainable future for the Kingdom. Localizing the energy sector plays a central role in achieving these goals, as it reduces reliance on imported materials, shortens supply chains, and strengthens the domestic economy. This approach accelerates the deployment of critical infrastructure and supports long-term sustainability by fostering local expertise and innovation. This article aims to explore why the localization of the energy sector is imperative to making this a long-term reality.

The benefits of localized energy production

Localization in energy refers to prioritizing domestic resources, materials, and expertise over reliance on international supply chains. This approach encourages investment in local energy sources while creating opportunities for contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers within the region. It drives self-sufficiency, stimulates job creation, and strengthens the local economy.

Alfanar Projects has become a recognized leader in advancing localization across Saudi Arabia’s energy sector. A strong example is the company’s work on the Alfanar Solar PV Park, which reflects how investment in domestic renewable projects extends beyond construction. With such initiatives, ongoing operations, maintenance, and upgrades can be managed by local suppliers, ensuring that long-term value remains within the Kingdom and reinforcing a sustainable cycle of growth and expertise.

Aligning our energy goals with Saudi Vision 2030

At last year’s Energy Localization Forum, which took place in Riyadh, we strengthened our commitment to Saudi Vision 2030 by signing new strategic contracts with the Saudi Electric Company. The initiative invites stakeholders of leading energy firms to discuss the importance of the evolving energy market and localized supply chains in the Middle East. These contracts will reinforce this goal, and one of their most significant aspects is to promote energy self-sufficiency while establishing Saudi Arabia as a regional energy leader in the Middle East.

Saudi Vision 2030 aims to build a thriving society and economy, with sustainability at the heart of its infrastructure projects, and the contracts include several projects that will improve energy grid reliability in the Kingdom. Additionally, Alfanar Projects is assisting the Kingdom’s shift to renewable energy facilities, thanks to several localized solutions. For example, projects included in these agreements will involve battery energy storage systems (BESS) that support power distribution and consumption, which store surplus solar and wind energy and release it when demand is high. Over the next five years, Alfanar Projects will be directly involved in strategic projects that will not only deliver localized energy offerings but also ensure the Kingdom has sustainable power production solutions for future generations.

Alfanar Projects' success stories

Alfanar Project has been operating in the utilities sector since the 1970s, and during the last five decades, we have supported energy markets both at home and abroad. While our presence has grown around the world, particularly in parts of Asia, Europe and northern Africa, we have maintained our commitment to supporting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. From large-scale power transmission to renewable energy projects, we have played a key role in developing localized energy solutions.

Back in 2019, we worked alongside the Saudi Electric Company (SEC) to explore the potential of smart meters in modernizing Saudi Arabia's energy infrastructure, which was a significant step toward enhancing the Kingdom’s energy efficiency and reliability. This project plan identified the critical role smart meters could play in energy efficiency and consumer empowerment. This led to a successful project we are proud to have been a part of that saw the rollout of five million smart meters, improving both self-sufficiency and the overall energy infrastructure of Saudi Arabia.

Crucially, the project depended on domestic resources as a third of the smart meters were manufactured locally. We recognized that smart meters would support regions across the Kingdom to become more self-sufficient, as they enable real-time monitoring, analysis, and control of electricity consumption.

More recently, in November 2024, Alfanar Projects secured an ambitious partnership with Saudia Arabia’s Local Content and Government Procurement Authority. This partnership involved an agreement with a household name in computing and cloud technology, and has strengthened our commitment to localized solutions. Part of the agreement is to localize data centers and transfer knowledge to help companies in Saudi Arabia grow their expertise and harness evolving technology.

Our commitment to localized energy solutions

As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues its push to diversify its economy under Vision 2030, the localization of the energy sector will be a cornerstone of its efforts to build a prosperous, sustainable, and secure future for generations to come.

With the projects and initiatives discussed in this article in mind, localization in Saudi Arabia has become more than a strategic enterprise. While investments must be made to bolster sustainable energy solutions, Alfanar Projects and our partners are taking the right steps to build a self-sufficient future for Saudi Arabia.

Our dedication to championing domestic resources and growing a robust local supply chain is helping Saudi Arabia become a self-sufficient region that supports its residents while also appealing to global businesses and tourists. Thanks to our commitment to delivering local power production, coupled with the long-term ambition of Saudi Vision 2030, the ongoing investment in localization will accelerate economic growth and social prosperity.
